What actually counts as top 2%
By field, tier by tier.
Admissions readers see thousands of applications. "Top 2%" isn't a slogan — it's the specific programs, competitions, and outputs that show up so often on admitted-student profiles they've become shorthand for "this student operates at a national level." Use this to locate yourself honestly, then pick one rung to climb.
Spike, don't spread. One top-2% line plus real depth beats a scattered résumé of "solid" activities every time. Pick one field to go deep in.

How to actually use this
- 1. Locate yourself. For each of your current activities, decide honestly which tier it fits. Most students start with 2–3 "Solid" items — that's normal.
- 2. Pick your spike field. Choose one field where a "Top 2%" line would meaningfully change your application. That becomes your priority.
- 3. Ladder up one rung. From "Solid" → "Strong" → "Top 2%." Don't skip levels; the "Strong" tier is usually the prerequisite for the top tier (state before national, regional Gold Key before National Gold Medal).
- 4. Add it to your EC plan. Turn the target into a pillar with a concrete deadline (application date, submission cycle, tournament date).
